Google Trends: America’s Most Popular Media Provider and Coronavirus Surpasses Impeachment

NETFLIX’S CONTINUOUS REIGN

The media service provider, Netflix, was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph. Other mainstream media providers such as Hulu and Disney+ are serious competition against Netflix’s streaming dominance. On November 12, 2019, Disney+ was launched and more than 10 million people had signed up on its release day.

According to an analysis of Google Trends search data, Disney + (blue) was the most searched media provider on the week of its release, surpassing Hulu (red) and Netflix (yellow).

Although Disney+ surpassed Netflix the week it was released, Disney+ popularity gradually declines. This gradual decline resulted in Netflix and Disney+ being neck and neck at the end of 2019.

From the map graph above, it can be concluded that although Disney+ surpassed Netflix the week it was released, Netflix is still the dominant media provider within the U.S. Netflix is considered the most highly coveted media provider when compared to Hulu and Disney+. However, Florida had a higher search interest in Disney+ than Netflix.

CORONAVIRUS SURPASSES TRUMP IMPEACHMENT IN GOOGLE SEARCHES

The Trump Impeachment hearings have been receiving massive news coverage over the past month. On December 18th, 2019, the impeachment of Donald Trump occurred as the House of Representatives passed two impeachment articles. According the House of Representatives, Donald Trump has been charged with abuse of power and obstructing Congress.

As the Trump Impeachment continues to remain relevant in the media, there has been wide coverage on the Coronavirus that has been infecting individuals around the world. This outbreak of disease started in Wuhan, China and has developed an alarming number of cases and deaths.

Despite receiving massive media coverage over the past month, the new outbreak of the Coronavirus has overshadowed the Trump Impeachment hearings. According to an analysis of Google Trends search data, as of this week, the coronavirus (red) has greatly surpassed the Trump Impeachment hearings (blue) in web searches.
